Smash Hit Anime 'Kimi no Na wa' to be Screened in Philippines


Japan's smash hit animated fantasy film "Kimi no Na wa (Your Name.), was confirmed to hit the Philippine theaters after SM Cinema made a post on its website on Saturday afternoon. 

The film will be shown in local theaters starting next week, December 14, 2016,a week before the start of the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

The film was about two teenagers drawn to each other by gender-swapping dreams. It was Directed by Makoto Shinkai ("5 Centimeters per Second"), a Japanese director who has been praised as closely compared to  Studio Ghibli's acclaimed auteur Hayao Miyazaki.

"Kimi no Na wa" which grossed more than 20 billion yen (close to P8.7 billion) has earned good remarks and left moviegoers in Japan captivated since its released last August. It beats the the 19.6 billion yen (close to P8.5 million) earnings of Studio Ghibli's "Howl's Moving Castle", making it as the current second highest grossing Japanese film of all time, next to the Oscar-winning "Spirited Away," also from Studio Ghibli, which earned 30.8 billion yen (P13 billion) globally.

For nine straight weekends, "Kimi no Na wa" topped the Japanese box office before it dropped to 2nd place. For two more weeks, it took over the top place again before settling to number two next to the Harry Potter film franchise spin-off "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them". 

"Kimi no Na wa" also made the official Oscar consideration list in the Best Animated Feature category. It is the second Japanese film to screen in Philippine theaters in as many weeks following the local release of the live-action film "Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April)."

SM Cinema said that theaters which will be showing "Kimi no Na wa" will be announced in the coming days.
